Educational Video Game Review Assignment

Due 8/1 - 6:00pm
20 points

Pick an ‘educational’ video or computer game to examine, and create a wiki entry for that game, detailing how the game itself is played, any principles of learning involved, and specific content learned (or practiced) from playing. This project is due at the fourth class, and will be presented to a small group of other students. For a list of suggested games for this project, see the 'Educational Game Directory'.

Specific Assignment Details

  1. Try to pick a game no one else in the class is reviewing. Once you decide on a game, please post the name of it in the discussion thread so other students can pick different games.
  2. Some educational games are very short (more like mini-games). If the game you picked doesn't take at least 45 minutes to play, consider adding a second, similar, game to the review too. For example, many of the Civics games are short and complement each other.
  3. Your review should include the following elements:
  • (4 points) A brief description of the game. You may include images or even video clips to help give readers a better idea of the game.
  • (5 points) The kinds of learning involved (i.e. What specifically did you learn from playing the game?). Think about the game tasks, objectives, terminology, etc. What skills did you need to learn to be successful at the game? Note that many 'educational' games don't actually teach new content area skills, but rather allow students to practice skills they've already learned elsewhere.
  • (5 points) The kinds of teaching involved (i.e. How did the game teach you?). Think about the kinds of feedback, rewards, guidance, and information the game gave you, and how it paced and structured your learning. Which Principles of Learning did the game utilize?
  • (6 points) Your overall reflections on playing the game. How might a teacher use the game in their curriculum?
